Which character becomes Lightning McQueen’s new racing rival in Pixar’s Cars 3?

Jackson Storm becomes Lightning McQueen’s new racing rival in Pixar’s Cars 3.

Storm represents a technologically advanced generation of racers. His sleek design, modern training methods, and consistently fast performance make Lightning confront the possibility that experience alone may no longer be enough to win.

Unlike Chick Hicks in the original Cars, Storm is not mainly portrayed as a reckless veteran rival from Lightning’s own generation. He is a younger competitor whose success changes the balance of the Piston Cup field. This distinction drives the film’s central conflict about aging, adaptation, and the future of racing.

Lightning eventually receives help from Cruz Ramirez, a trainer whose own abilities become increasingly important. The film’s conclusion shifts attention away from a simple victory-over-a-rival story and toward mentorship and passing knowledge to the next generation.
