Which character appeared on McDonald’s first logo, introduced in 1948?

The story behind the answer

Speedee appeared on McDonald’s first logo, introduced in 1948.

Speedee was a small chef character used to represent McDonald’s early focus on fast service. The mascot appeared with the restaurant’s name and helped communicate the company’s original emphasis on speed and standardized preparation.

The logo dates to the period when Richard and Maurice McDonald were developing their streamlined restaurant system in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, the brothers reorganized the restaurant around a limited menu and rapid service, and Speedee fit that identity better than the later Golden Arches.

Speedee is often confused with Ronald McDonald or the Hamburglar because all three became associated with McDonald’s advertising. They belong to different eras, however. Speedee was the earliest logo mascot; Ronald became prominent in the 1960s, while the Hamburglar was introduced later as part of the McDonaldland cast.
