Which Chanel perfume was launched in 1971, the year of Coco Chanel's death?

The story behind the answer

The Chanel perfume launched in 1971, the year of Coco Chanel’s death, was Chanel No. 19.

The fragrance was created by Chanel perfumer Henri Robert and first marketed in 1971. Its name refers not to a product sequence but to Coco Chanel’s birthday: 19 August 1883. Chanel died on 10 January 1971, so No. 19 reached the market during the final year of her life.

No. 19 is known for a green, floral character built around galbanum, iris, rose, jasmine, vetiver, leather and musk. That profile helps distinguish it from Chanel No. 5, the house’s aldehydic floral released in 1921, and Chanel No. 22, another floral-aldehydic fragrance associated with 1922.

A common mix-up is assuming the number marks the perfume’s launch year. Chanel’s numbered fragrances do not all follow one naming rule: No. 19 commemorates a birthday, while No. 22 is associated with its creation year. In 2011, Chanel introduced No. 19 Poudré, a softer reinterpretation of the original scent.
