Which Chanel bag, featuring a CC turn-lock, debuted in 1983?

The story behind the answer

The Chanel bag featuring an interlocking CC turn-lock that debuted in 1983 was the Classic Flap Bag.

The Classic Flap is Karl Lagerfeld’s reinterpretation of Coco Chanel’s earlier 2.55 handbag. When Lagerfeld joined Chanel as artistic director in 1983, he refreshed the established quilted flap design with the now-famous interlocking double-C clasp and a leather-woven chain strap.

That distinction is the source of one of fashion’s most common Chanel mix-ups. The original 2.55 was created in February 1955 and used a rectangular “Mademoiselle” lock, while the Classic Flap became associated with the CC turn-lock. The two bags share the quilted body, flap construction, and chain styling, but they are not identical models.

The Classic Flap is also commonly connected with the Chanel 11.12 designation, a style code that became an official name for a particular version of the bag. The Boy Bag and Gabrielle Bag are separate Chanel designs introduced much later and do not refer to the 1983 reinterpretation.
