Which Champagne appellation style is made only from black grapes?

The story behind the answer

Blanc de noirs is the Champagne style made only from black grapes.

The French phrase means “white of blacks.” In Champagne, it generally refers to a white sparkling wine produced from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, or both. Although the grapes have dark skins, the juice inside is pale, so gentle pressing can produce a white wine without extracting much skin color.

Blanc de noirs Champagne often has more body, structure, and red-fruit character than many Chardonnay-led wines, though style depends on vineyard, vintage, blending, and aging. It should not be confused with rosé Champagne, which intentionally has a pink hue.

The opposite term is blanc de blancs, meaning “white of whites,” traditionally used for Champagne made solely from white grapes, especially Chardonnay. These terms describe grape color and composition, not whether the wine is sweet, vintage, or non-vintage.
