Which cave is traditionally identified as the place where Muhammad received the first Quran revelation?

The story behind the answer

Cave of Hira is traditionally identified as the place where Muhammad received the first Quran revelation. The cave is on Jabal al-Nour, the Mountain of Light, near Mecca in present-day Saudi Arabia.

Islamic tradition holds that Muhammad regularly withdrew to Hira for prayer and contemplation before his prophetic mission. During Ramadan, the angel Gabriel appeared to him there and delivered the opening verses traditionally associated with Quran chapter 96.

Cave of Hira is sometimes confused with the Cave of Thawr. Thawr is associated with Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina, when he and Abu Bakr sheltered there during the journey. The two caves have different locations and traditions.
