Which cat breed was developed from Siamese and Burmese cats?

The story behind the answer

The Tonkinese cat breed was developed from Siamese and Burmese cats.

Breeders used the two parent breeds to combine Siamese body and color traits with the more rounded form and richer coat colors associated with Burmese cats. The result is a medium-sized cat with a close coat, expressive eyes, and color patterns that can fall between traditional Siamese points and Burmese solid coloration.

The breed was initially known in North America as the “Golden Siamese,” but the name Tonkinese became standard. The name refers to the Gulf of Tonkin region, although the breed was not developed there as a native landrace.

Tonkinese cats are sometimes confused with color-pointed Burmese or less extreme Siamese cats. Their defining history is the deliberate combination of those two established lineages, rather than ancestry from a wild species.
