The Javanese is named after the island of Java even though it was developed in North America.
The name belongs to a long-haired breed type related to the Siamese and Balinese. Javanese cats generally have a slim, elegant body, a wedge-shaped head, large ears, and a silky coat. Unlike the Balinese, which traditionally has Siamese-style color points, Javanese classifications have included additional colors and patterns depending on the registry.
The geographic name is part of a broader naming convention used for Oriental-type cats. It does not mean that the modern breed originated on Java or that it is a native Indonesian landrace.
Registry treatment also creates a common source of confusion: some organizations treat the Javanese as a separate breed, while others place it within a broader Colorpoint Shorthair or Balinese grouping.
