Moe Greene is the casino owner Michael Corleone confronts in Las Vegas in The Godfather.
Greene, played by Alex Rocco, controls a casino operation in Las Vegas and has a tense relationship with the Corleone family. Michael wants the family to move its investments westward, but Greene resists selling his interest and objects to the proposed change in management.
The confrontation takes place during Michael’s effort to reposition the family’s business after Vito Corleone’s retirement. Greene’s arrogance and refusal to compromise make him an obstacle to Michael’s long-term strategy. His famous response to Michael’s proposal shows that he does not recognize the younger Corleone’s authority.
Moe Greene is later assassinated in a sequence based on the real-life murder of Las Vegas figure Bugsy Siegel, although the character and circumstances are fictionalized. The film’s visual presentation of Greene’s death helped make the character one of its memorable secondary figures.
