Which Casablanca mosque has a 210-metre minaret overlooking the Atlantic Ocean?

The story behind the answer

The Casablanca mosque with a 210-metre minaret overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is the Hassan II Mosque.

Located on a promontory beside the sea, the Hassan II Mosque is one of Morocco’s most recognizable modern landmarks. Its minaret rises 210 metres, making it one of the tallest minarets in the world. A laser at its summit is directed toward Mecca and can be seen from a considerable distance.

The mosque was designed by French architect Michel Pinseau under the patronage of King Hassan II. Construction began in 1986, and the complex was completed and inaugurated in 1993. Moroccan artisans contributed intricate zellige tilework, carved plaster, painted wood, marble surfaces, and other traditional decorative elements.

The building is partly constructed on reclaimed land over the Atlantic, which inspired many visitors to repeat the story that it has a glass floor over the ocean. That is a common misconception: worshippers can pray facing the sea, but the mosque does not have a transparent floor looking into the water. The complex can accommodate about 105,000 people across its indoor and outdoor spaces.
