Which Cars character is based on the real Hudson Hornet racing car?

The story behind the answer

Doc Hudson is the Cars character based on the real Hudson Hornet racing car.

In Pixar’s story, Doc is a retired champion who won three Piston Cups before a crash ended his career. His fictional history reflects the real Hudson Hornet’s importance in early stock-car racing, especially during NASCAR’s formative years.

The production team used the Hudson Hornet as a visual and historical reference for Doc. The real car was produced by the Hudson Motor Car Company and became known for its “step-down” design and strong racing performance in the early 1950s.

Doc is not simply a historical car copied into the film: he has a distinct personality, a medical role, and a personal relationship with Radiator Springs. Lightning McQueen, Chick Hicks, and Jackson Storm are fictional racing characters with different design inspirations, but Doc is the franchise’s clearest tribute to the Hudson Hornet.
