St. George’s is the capital and largest city of Grenada, a Caribbean island country in the Lesser Antilles. The city curves around a horseshoe-shaped harbour and is surrounded by steep hills formed by an old volcanic landscape.
French colonists first settled the site in the 17th century. After Grenada was ceded to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the town was renamed Saint George’s Town, honouring Saint George, the patron saint of England. Fort Royal was also renamed Fort George after King George III.
The capital is often confused with Bridgetown, the capital of nearby Barbados, or Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia. Grenada became independent from Britain in 1974. St. George’s remains the country’s administrative centre and an important harbour, tourism hub and gateway to Grenada’s mountainous interior.
