The Volkswagen Golf GTI is credited with pioneering the hot hatch segment.

Volkswagen took the practical, front-wheel-drive Golf hatchback and gave it a stronger engine, sharper handling and sporting details, creating a formula that appealed to drivers who wanted near-sports-car performance without sacrificing everyday usability. The GTI was announced at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show and released in July 1976.

The original Mk1 GTI used a fuel-injected 1.6-litre engine and became a landmark in performance-car history. Its compact size, relatively low weight and responsive chassis made it quick and entertaining while retaining the Golf’s hatchback practicality. The model’s success encouraged other manufacturers to develop fast versions of ordinary small hatchbacks.

The Renault 5 Alpine appeared in the same formative period and is an important early rival, so “first hot hatch” can be debated depending on the definition used. However, the Golf GTI is the standard answer for the car credited with establishing the segment’s popularity. The term “hot hatch” itself became common only later, in the 1980s.
