Which capital of Vietnam lies on the Red River?

The story behind the answer

Which capital of Vietnam lies on the Red River? Hanoi is the Vietnamese capital situated on the Red River in northern Vietnam.

The city occupies a strategic position on the river’s right bank, within the fertile Red River Delta. That setting helped Hanoi develop as a political and cultural center, while the delta’s waterways supported farming, transport, and regional trade. The river is also known by the Vietnamese name Sông Hồng, meaning “Red River.”

Hanoi has a long history under several names. In 1010, Emperor Lý Thái Tổ moved the Đại Việt capital to the site and named it Thăng Long, or “Ascending Dragon.” The city later acquired other names before Hanoi became official in 1831 under the Nguyễn dynasty.

Hanoi served as the capital of North Vietnam from 1945 and became the capital of reunified Vietnam in 1976. A common mix-up is choosing Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city, which lies much farther south in the Mekong region.
