Which capital of Saudi Arabia is in the Najd region?

The story behind the answer

Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and is located in the Najd region.

Najd is the elevated central region of the Arabian Peninsula, covering much of central Saudi Arabia. Riyadh stands on the Najd plateau near Wadi Hanifa, at an elevation of roughly 600 metres, and serves as the region’s dominant political and economic centre.

The city developed from oasis settlements and became a walled town in the eighteenth century. After Diriyah, the first Saudi capital, was destroyed in 1818, Riyadh became the capital of the Second Saudi State in the 1820s. It was also the seat of Ibn Saud’s expanding power before the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was proclaimed in 1932.

Manama, Muscat, and Doha are valid national capitals, but they belong to Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar. None is in Saudi Arabia’s inland Najd region.
