Which capital of Latvia stands on the Daugava River?

The story behind the answer

Which capital of Latvia stands on the Daugava River? Riga does.

Riga is Latvia’s capital and largest city, situated at the mouth of the Daugava where the river meets the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea. The city grew in part because this location offered a sheltered harbour and access to an important east–west trading route.

The Daugava rises in Russia’s Valdai Hills, flows through Belarus and Latvia, and travels about 1,020 kilometres before reaching the Baltic. In medieval times, it formed part of the route known as the “road from the Varangians to the Greeks,” linking the Baltic region with lands around Byzantium. Riga later became a major Hanseatic trading centre.

The river is sometimes called the Western Dvina, especially in historical or geographic contexts. Riga is built on both banks of its estuary, and several bridges connect the city across the water. The river’s mouth also explains why Riga is both a cultural capital and a significant port.

A common confusion is the Gulf of Riga: the city borders that gulf, but its urban setting is specifically associated with the Daugava’s mouth.
