Which capital of Armenia was founded as Erebuni in 782 BC?

The story behind the answer

Yerevan is the capital of Armenia and was founded as Erebuni in 782 BC.

The ancient fortress of Erebuni was established on the site of modern Yerevan by King Argishti I of Urartu. A surviving cuneiform inscription records the foundation date and describes the stronghold as a major royal construction.

Erebuni served as a fortress and administrative centre guarding Urartian territory from threats approaching from the north. The settlement formed part of a wider network that included irrigation works, reservoirs, and the later Urartian city of Teishebaini nearby. Archaeological remains can still be visited at Erebuni Fortress.

The modern city’s name and continuous urban history developed over many centuries, so Yerevan is not identical to the ancient fortress in every historical detail. Ankara, Baku, and Tbilisi are neighbouring regional capitals, but none was founded as Erebuni.
