Which capital city sits on the Han River and is South Korea's capital?

The story behind the answer

Which capital city sits on the Han River and is South Korea's capital? The answer is Seoul.

Seoul is South Korea’s capital and largest city, built along the Han River in the northwestern part of the country. The river divides much of the urban area into northern and southern sections before flowing west toward the Yellow Sea. Bridges, riverside parks, and landmarks such as Banpo Bridge make the Han central to the city’s identity.

The settlement’s history reaches back to the Three Kingdoms period. Baekje founded a settlement in the area in 18 BC, and Seoul later became the capital of the Joseon dynasty. Its historic core grew around palaces, gates, and the Fortress Wall of Seoul.

A common mix-up is confusing Seoul with Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. Another is treating the Seoul Metropolitan Area—which includes Incheon and Gyeonggi Province—as identical to Seoul proper. The city itself is officially designated Seoul Special Metropolitan City.
