Which capital city is located on the island of Borneo?

The story behind the answer

Which capital city is located on the island of Borneo? The answer is Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei.

Bandar Seri Begawan lies in Brunei–Muara District on the northern coast of Borneo, the world’s third-largest island. Brunei occupies a small section of Borneo’s north coast, surrounded mostly by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. The city sits along the Brunei River near Brunei Bay and serves as the country’s political, commercial and cultural centre.

The modern city grew from Brunei’s historic water settlement, Kampong Ayer, whose communities are built on stilts over the river. Brunei Town was formally renamed Bandar Seri Begawan on 4 October 1970, honouring Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, who helped modernise the country.

A frequent mix-up is assuming Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta is on Borneo. Kuala Lumpur is on the Malay Peninsula, while Jakarta is on Java. Indonesia’s Borneo territory, known as Kalimantan, has cities such as Samarinda and Palangka Raya, but neither is a national capital. Bandar Seri Begawan is the only sovereign-state capital located on Borneo.
