Which capital city is home to the Trevi Fountain?

The story behind the answer

The capital city home to the Trevi Fountain is Rome. The fountain occupies a celebrated intersection in Rome’s Trevi district, where it forms the terminal display of the ancient Acqua Vergine water system.

The present Baroque fountain was begun in 1732 to a design by Nicola Salvi and completed in 1762 by Giuseppe Pannini. Its central figure is Oceanus, riding a shell-shaped chariot drawn by a calm horse and a restless horse, symbols often interpreted as representing the contrasting moods of the sea. The fountain is built against the façade of Palazzo Poli.

The site’s name is linked to tre vie, meaning “three roads,” and the fountain marks the point where three streets meet. The water still comes from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct, whose origins reach back to ancient Rome. Visitors commonly associate the fountain with the coin-throwing tradition: one coin is traditionally tossed with the right hand over the left shoulder to express a wish to return to Rome.
