Which capital city is home to the Reichstag building?

The story behind the answer

The capital city home to the Reichstag building is Berlin. The historic parliamentary building stands on Platz der Republik in Berlin and has been the seat of Germany’s Bundestag since the country’s reunification era.

Designed by architect Paul Wallot, the Neo-Renaissance building was constructed between 1884 and 1894 for the legislature of the German Empire. It later housed the parliament of the Weimar Republic. The 1933 Reichstag fire severely damaged the building and became a crucial event in the Nazi regime’s consolidation of power; the legislature subsequently met elsewhere.

After the Second World War, the building was restored and later comprehensively redesigned by Norman Foster between 1995 and 1999. Its famous glass dome now offers visitors a view over Berlin and down into the debating chamber. A common mix-up is calling the institution itself the Reichstag: today, the parliament is the Bundestag, while Reichstag usually refers to the building.
