Which capital city is home to the Prado Museum?

The story behind the answer

The capital city home to the Prado Museum is Madrid. Spain’s Museo Nacional del Prado stands on the Paseo del Prado in central Madrid and is the country’s main national art museum.

The building was designed by architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785 for King Charles III, originally as a Natural History Cabinet. It opened as a public museum in November 1819 under Ferdinand VII, displaying works from the Spanish royal collection.

The Prado is especially famous for Spanish masters such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya and El Greco, while also holding major works by Titian, Rubens, Bosch and Raphael. Its collection spans European art from the 12th century to the early 20th century.

A common mix-up is confusing the Prado with Madrid’s other major museums. The nearby Reina Sofía specializes in modern art, including Picasso’s Guernica, while the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum has a broad private collection.
