Which capital city is home to the Petronas Towers?

The story behind the answer

Which capital city is home to the Petronas Towers? Kuala Lumpur is the answer: the Petronas Towers stand in Malaysia’s capital at the KLCC complex.

The Petronas Towers are an interlinked pair of 88-storey skyscrapers in central Kuala Lumpur. Designed by architect César Pelli, they use reinforced concrete with a steel-and-glass exterior influenced by Islamic geometric forms. Their distinctive skybridge connects the towers at levels 41 and 42.

Construction began in 1993, and the towers were officially opened on August 31, 1999, Malaysia’s National Day. At 451.9 metres, they were the world’s tallest buildings from 1998 until 2004, when Taipei 101 surpassed them. They remain the world’s tallest twin skyscrapers.

The towers are often confused with Kuala Lumpur Tower, a separate communications and observation tower nearby. They are also not in Jakarta, Bangkok, or Singapore: those are different Southeast Asian capitals. The Petronas Towers’ location in the Kuala Lumpur City Centre gives them their common “KLCC” nickname.
