Which capital city is home to the Atomium, built for Expo 58? Brussels is home to the Atomium, built for Expo 58.
The Atomium was constructed as the centrepiece and emblem of the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, held on the Heysel Plateau in the Laeken area of Brussels. Engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak designed it as a giant representation of an iron crystal unit cell, enlarged roughly 165 billion times.
Its nine stainless-steel-clad spheres reflect the optimism of the post-war Atomic Age and the era’s faith in scientific and technological progress. The structure was originally intended to stand for only the six months of the exhibition, but its popularity persuaded authorities to preserve it.
The Atomium became one of Brussels’s defining landmarks, alongside the Grand-Place and Manneken Pis. A renovation from 2004 to 2006 replaced the original aluminium cladding with stainless steel. Visitors can enter six of the nine spheres, including the upper sphere, which offers panoramic views and contains a restaurant.
