Which capital city is home to the Arc de Triomphe?
Answer
Paris
Answer
Paris
The capital city home to the Arc de Triomphe is Paris. The monument stands at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, where twelve avenues radiate outward in a star-shaped pattern.
Napoleon commissioned the arch in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, intending it to honour French soldiers of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Architect Jean-François Chalgrin designed it, but construction was interrupted during the Bourbon Restoration. The monument was finally completed in 1836 under King Louis-Philippe.
The Arc de Triomphe is more than a Napoleonic monument. Its inner and outer surfaces list French victories and military leaders, while beneath it lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War, with an eternal flame rekindled each evening. A common mix-up is confusing it with the smaller Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel near the Louvre.
