Which capital city is home to Red Square?

The story behind the answer

Moscow is the capital city home to Red Square.

Red Square lies in Moscow’s historic centre, immediately east of the Kremlin. It is surrounded by landmarks including Saint Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, the State Historical Museum, and the GUM department store. The square is both a major public space and one of Russia’s most recognizable symbols.

Its Russian name, Krasnaya Ploshchad, originally meant “Beautiful Square” because the older meaning of krasnaya was “beautiful.” The modern Russian word for red later gave the square its familiar English name. The site developed as Moscow’s main marketplace and also hosted proclamations, ceremonies, demonstrations, executions, and military parades.

Red Square is not inside the Kremlin, although the Kremlin’s eastern wall forms its southwestern boundary. Together, the Kremlin and Red Square became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. Minsk, Kyiv, and Warsaw also have historic central squares, but none is the location of Moscow’s famous Red Square. The square measures roughly 330 metres by 70 metres.
