Which capital city hosts the headquarters of NATO?

The story behind the answer

Which capital city hosts the headquarters of NATO? The answer is Brussels, Belgium.

NATO’s political and administrative headquarters is in Haren, a district of the City of Brussels within the Brussels-Capital Region. The complex stands on Boulevard Léopold III, close to Brussels Airport, and houses the organization’s international staff, national delegations and diplomatic missions.

NATO moved its headquarters to Brussels in 1967 after earlier locations in London and Paris. The original Brussels complex was intended to be temporary, but the alliance remained there for decades. A new headquarters building opened in 2017, providing a large conference and office complex for the organization’s expanding membership.

The headquarters is not the same as NATO’s main operational military command. Allied Command Operations is based at SHAPE near Mons, about 80 kilometres south of Brussels. Paris and London can therefore appear in historical accounts of NATO, but Brussels is the current and canonical answer for the alliance’s headquarters.
