The Candlebox song that reached Billboard’s Top 20 and remained there for roughly seven months was “Far Behind.” Released as the band’s third single, it became the breakthrough hit from Candlebox’s 1993 self-titled debut album.
“Far Behind” was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun. Wood died in 1990, and his death deeply affected the Seattle music community, including Candlebox vocalist Kevin Martin. The song’s success helped bring the band’s melodic hard-rock sound to a much larger audience.
The single peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100. Although the song is associated with 1993, its chart run extended into January 1994, which explains why references sometimes describe its Top 20 presence as lasting seven months. The album eventually sold more than four million copies in the United States.
