Which canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Panama?
Answer
Panama Canal
Answer
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Panama.
The artificial waterway crosses the Isthmus of Panama and uses a system of locks to raise ships to Gatun Lake and then lower them back to sea level. It opened officially on 15 August 1914, creating a much shorter route between the Atlantic and Pacific than sailing around Cape Horn.
France began an earlier construction attempt in the 1880s, but disease, engineering problems, and financial collapse halted the project. The United States later completed the canal, which it controlled until transferring administration to Panama at the end of 1999.
The canal’s Atlantic entrance is near Colón, while its Pacific entrance is near Panama City. Despite the oceans it links, the canal’s Pacific entrance lies east of its Atlantic entrance because of the shape of the isthmus. The Suez Canal is different: it links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.
