Which Canadian city hosts the national capital Canada Day celebrations?

The story behind the answer

Which Canadian city hosts the national capital Canada Day celebrations? Ottawa hosts them.

The main national Canada Day ceremony takes place in the capital, centred on Parliament Hill and nearby ceremonial sites in downtown Ottawa. The program commonly includes speeches, music, military traditions, Indigenous elements, citizenship activities and large public gatherings.

Canada Day commemorates the creation of the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867, when Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick entered Confederation. Ottawa was selected as the capital by Queen Victoria in 1857, partly because its inland location offered strategic advantages between major English- and French-speaking centres.

Other cities, including Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, hold major Canada Day celebrations of their own. They are not the national capital festivities, however; that distinction belongs to Ottawa. The city’s celebrations are also sometimes adjusted or relocated because of weather, security, construction or public-health considerations.
