Which Cambridge college appointed C.S. Lewis as a fellow in 1954?

The story behind the answer

Magdalene College appointed C.S. Lewis as a fellow in 1954.

Lewis became the first holder of the Cambridge chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature in 1954, and Magdalene College was his Cambridge base. He had previously spent most of his academic career at Oxford, where he was a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College, Oxford.

The two colleges are easy to confuse because both are traditionally pronounced “Maudlin,” and both were connected with Lewis at different stages of his career. The Oxford college was central to his teaching and writing life from 1925, while the Cambridge appointment came near the end of his career.

Lewis continued teaching at Cambridge until his death in 1963. His move did not mean that he abandoned Oxford entirely; he retained strong personal and professional associations there. Magdalene College, Cambridge, therefore marks the final major academic appointment in his career.
