Which California punk band released the 1994 album Smash?

The story behind the answer

The California punk band that released the 1994 album Smash was The Offspring.

Smash was The Offspring’s third studio album and was released on 8 April 1994 by the independent label Epitaph Records. The band recorded it at Track Record in North Hollywood during January and February, completing the sessions in only about 20 days.

Frontman Dexter Holland, guitarist Noodles, bassist Greg K. and drummer Ron Welty made the album on a modest budget of roughly $20,000. Its songs, especially “Come Out and Play” and “Self Esteem,” helped punk reach a much larger audience during the 1990s alternative-rock boom.

Pennywise, NOFX, and Bad Religion were also important California punk or skate-punk acts, and several were Epitaph labelmates. However, none released this album. Smash became one of the best-selling independently released albums ever and helped persuade major labels to pursue punk bands.
