Which building, now called Independence Hall, hosted the 1787 Constitutional Convention?
Answer
Pennsylvania State House
Answer
Pennsylvania State House
The Pennsylvania State House hosted the 1787 Constitutional Convention and is now called Independence Hall.
The building stands in Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. It was completed in 1753 as the seat of Pennsylvania’s colonial government and later became the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress.
The Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted there in 1776. Eleven years later, delegates met in the same building for the Constitutional Convention, which ran from May 25 to September 17, 1787. The convention drafted the United States Constitution, replacing the Articles of Confederation with a stronger federal framework.
The building acquired the name Independence Hall in the nineteenth century because of its connection with the Declaration. Carpenter’s Hall hosted the First Continental Congress in 1774, while Federal Hall in New York hosted the first United States Congress under the Constitution. Those locations are important but are not the answer to this question.
