Casa Rosada is the building in Buenos Aires that serves as the official workplace and seat of the President of Argentina.
Officially called Casa de Gobierno, the pink palace stands at the eastern end of Plaza de Mayo. It houses the president’s offices and is one of Buenos Aires’s most recognizable buildings. The president’s official residence, however, is Quinta de Olivos in Greater Buenos Aires, so Casa Rosada is the government workplace rather than normally being the presidential home.
The present complex developed by joining older government and postal structures. A new State House was commissioned in 1882, and architect Francesco Tamburini created the prominent connecting archway in 1884. The unified building was completed in 1898 after an eastward enlargement.
Its pink colour is commonly explained as a blend of red and white, the colours associated with rival nineteenth-century political factions, although another tradition attributes the paint to the use of cow’s blood as a protective material. The building also contains the Museum of the Casa Rosada and has been declared a National Historic Monument of Argentina.
