Blink replaced EdgeHTML in the rebuilt Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft announced in 2018 that it would rebuild Edge using the Chromium open-source project. The new browser, released broadly in January 2020, uses Chromium’s Blink rendering engine rather than Microsoft’s EdgeHTML. This change gave Edge a much closer compatibility relationship with Chrome and the wider Chromium ecosystem.
Blink originated as a fork of WebKit created by Google and other Chromium contributors in 2013. Chromium also supplies major browser components such as the V8 JavaScript engine, although Blink itself is the rendering engine responsible for laying out and displaying web content. Microsoft contributes changes to Chromium while retaining its own browser features, security systems, and user interface.
The older EdgeHTML engine continued to exist in Edge Legacy, but it was not used by the rebuilt Chromium-based Edge. This is why “Microsoft Edge” can refer to two historically different browsers: the 2015 Edge Legacy browser and the modern Chromium-based version.
