Which Britney Spears song became her first Billboard Hot 100 number one in 1999?

“...Baby One More Time” became Britney Spears’s first Billboard Hot 100 number one in 1999.

The song was written by Max Martin and produced by Martin and Rami Yacoub. Jive Records released it as the lead single from Spears’s debut studio album, also titled ...Baby One More Time. Its instantly recognizable opening vocal and school-uniform music video helped establish Spears as a major teen-pop star.

The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1999. It also topped charts in numerous countries and became one of the best-known debut singles of the late 1990s.

A frequent mistake is attributing the song’s writing to Spears. She recorded and performed it, but the composition came from Martin and Yacoub. “Oops!... I Did It Again” was another major Spears hit, but it did not reach number one on the Hot 100. “Toxic” and “Womanizer” also became signature songs without being her first chart leader.
