Which British trip-hop group released the 1998 album 'Mezzanine'?
Answer
Massive Attack
Answer
Massive Attack
Massive Attack released the 1998 album Mezzanine. The Bristol group’s third studio album arrived on April 20, 1998, through Circa and Virgin Records, and became their most commercially successful release.
Mezzanine marked a sharp turn from the comparatively soulful sound of Blue Lines and Protection. Robert "3D" Del Naja pushed the group toward darker textures shaped by post-punk, industrial music, dub, hip-hop, and electronica. The album’s heavy bass, ominous atmosphere, and layered production helped define a more intense side of trip-hop.
Its best-known songs include "Risingson," "Teardrop," "Angel," and "Inertia Creeps." Guest vocalists included Cocteau Twins singer Elizabeth Fraser and longtime collaborator Horace Andy. Fraser’s voice on "Teardrop" is especially associated with the record.
A common mix-up is Tricky, who was an early Massive Attack collaborator and member of the Bristol scene, but he was not the answer to this album question. Mezzanine was also the first Massive Attack album made without his participation.
