Which British Romantic poet wrote 'I wandered lonely as a cloud'?
Answer
William Wordsworth
Answer
William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth wrote “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,” the Romantic poem also widely known as “Daffodils.” Its speaker recalls seeing a great mass of daffodils and later finding that the memory continues to bring pleasure during quiet or reflective moments.
The poem was inspired by a walk Wordsworth took with his sister Dorothy on 15 April 1802 near Glencoyne Bay on Ullswater in England’s Lake District. Wordsworth wrote it in 1804, and it first appeared in Poems, in Two Volumes in 1807. He revised it for the 1815 edition, changing several words and adding a stanza.
The poem is especially associated with Romanticism because it turns an ordinary encounter with nature into an enduring emotional experience. It contains four six-line stanzas and uses an ABABCC rhyme scheme. Readers sometimes confuse Wordsworth with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, his fellow “Lake Poet,” but Coleridge did not write this daffodil poem.
