Which British luxury car brand uses the “Spirit of Ecstasy” hood ornament? The answer is Rolls-Royce.
The Spirit of Ecstasy is the distinctive figurine mounted on the bonnets of Rolls-Royce cars. It depicts a woman leaning forward, with her arms extended behind her and fabric flowing from her body like wings. The design was created by English sculptor Charles Sykes and was inspired by Eleanor Velasco Thornton, an associate of motoring pioneer Lord Montagu of Beaulieu.
Rolls-Royce adopted the mascot in the early twentieth century as a branded alternative to the unofficial ornaments owners had been fitting to their cars. It was registered as intellectual property in 1911, and the ornament became standard equipment on most Rolls-Royce cars during the early 1920s, after initially being offered as an option.
The figurine is not merely decorative. Rolls-Royce has repeatedly altered its height and shape to suit changing body designs and improve driver visibility. Since the 2003 Phantom, it has used a spring-loaded retracting mechanism. The lower, more aerodynamic version introduced for the electric Spectre is a modern reinterpretation, not a different brand emblem.
