Which British general surrendered his army at the Battles of Saratoga in 1777?

The story behind the answer

British General John Burgoyne surrendered his army at the Battles of Saratoga in 1777.

The Saratoga campaign was fought in New York in two major engagements, on September 19 and October 7, 1777. Burgoyne commanded the British forces, while American forces were led by General Horatio Gates, with Benedict Arnold also playing a major battlefield role.

After the British defeat at Bemis Heights, Burgoyne’s army retreated and became surrounded by a larger American force. He surrendered the army on October 17, 1777, in what became known as the Convention of Saratoga.

Saratoga was a major turning point in the Revolutionary War. The American victory persuaded France that the rebellion had a realistic chance of success, helping bring French military and financial support to the American cause. That alliance became crucial to the eventual defeat of Britain.
