Which British cooperative wholesaler was founded in Manchester in 1863?
Answer
Co-operative Wholesale Society
Answer
Co-operative Wholesale Society
The Co-operative Wholesale Society was founded in Manchester in 1863.
It was created to supply goods to retail cooperatives, allowing independent member-owned stores to buy collectively and compete more effectively with larger commercial businesses. By coordinating purchasing, warehousing, manufacturing, and distribution, the society helped local cooperatives gain economies of scale without abandoning their cooperative ownership model.
The organization later became closely associated with the wider British cooperative movement. Its activities expanded beyond wholesale distribution into manufacturing, retail, and other services. In modern history it is linked with the organization now known as the Co-operative Group, although the group’s structure and businesses have changed over time.
The Co-operative Wholesale Society should not be confused with The Co-operative Bank. The bank was a later financial business within the movement, while the 1863 society was primarily a wholesale supplier for cooperative retailers.
