Which bridge carried the Berlin Wall across the River Spree?
Answer
Oberbaum Bridge
Answer
Oberbaum Bridge
The Oberbaum Bridge carried the Berlin Wall across the River Spree.
The Oberbaumbrücke links the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. During Berlin’s division, the boundary between East and West Berlin ran through this area, and the bridge became part of the fortified border system. The Wall and associated barriers blocked ordinary passage across it.
The bridge had originally been built in the late nineteenth century and was designed in a historicist style with prominent towers. Its location made it an important crossing point over the Spree, a river that runs through central Berlin and reaches the city’s western waterways.
After reunification, the bridge reopened to public traffic and became a symbol of restored connections between formerly separated districts. Glienicke Bridge is another famous Berlin Cold War crossing, but it was located farther southwest and was associated especially with prisoner exchanges, not the Wall’s crossing of the Spree.
