Which breed is widely considered the most intelligent dog breed?

The story behind the answer

The Border Collie is widely considered the most intelligent dog breed, especially for working and obedience intelligence.

That reputation comes largely from canine psychologist Stanley Coren’s research and his 1994 book The Intelligence of Dogs. Coren’s ranking used surveys from dog-obedience judges and placed the Border Collie at the top for learning commands and responding reliably to human direction. Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and Doberman Pinschers also ranked highly.

The breed’s abilities reflect its origins as a sheep-herding dog from the Anglo-Scottish border region. Border Collies were selectively bred to watch livestock closely, respond to subtle signals, and make independent decisions while remaining under a handler’s control. These traits make them exceptionally trainable, but also energetic and demanding companions.

“Most intelligent” does not mean best at every kind of thinking. Coren’s ranking emphasizes working and obedience performance, while other researchers distinguish instinctive, adaptive, and social intelligence. A Border Collie still needs exercise, mental challenges, and purposeful training to thrive.
