Which breed is the state dog of Texas?

The story behind the answer

The Blue Lacy is the official state dog breed of Texas. The breed was developed in Texas by the Lacy family during the 19th century and became closely associated with ranch work across the state.

Blue Lacys were bred as versatile working dogs, handling tasks such as herding livestock, tracking game, treeing small animals, and hunting feral hogs. Their athletic build and strong scenting ability made them especially useful on Texas ranches.

The breed’s state status became official in 2005, when Governor Rick Perry signed legislation adopting the Blue Lacy as Texas’s official state dog breed. The name “Blue” refers to one common coat color, but Lacys can also be red or tri-colored.

A common mix-up is assuming Texas chose the Australian Cattle Dog or Texas Heeler because both are popular working dogs in the state. The Blue Lacy is different: it originated in Texas itself and remains strongly identified with the state.
