Which breed is the smallest of the sighthounds?

The story behind the answer

The Italian Greyhound is the smallest of the sighthounds. It is a miniature sighthound from Italy, bred for speed, keen vision, and the pursuit of small game such as hare and rabbit.

Despite its name, the Italian Greyhound is not simply a small Greyhound. It is a distinct ancient breed that became especially popular among European nobles and artists. Historical owners reportedly included Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great, and Queen Victoria.

Its slim body, deep chest, long legs, and tucked-up abdomen reflect classic sighthound anatomy. The breed can sprint rapidly, but modern Italian Greyhounds are primarily companion dogs. They are classified as toy dogs by the American Kennel Club and The Kennel Club, even though the Fédération Cynologique Internationale places them among sighthounds.

A common mix-up is confusing the Italian Greyhound with the Whippet. Whippets are considerably larger; the Italian Greyhound is the smallest recognized member of the sighthound group.
