Which breed is the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps?
Answer
English Bulldog
Answer
English Bulldog
The English Bulldog is the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps.
The association grew from the Marines’ World War I nickname “Devil Dogs,” which inspired a famous recruiting poster showing an English Bulldog in Marine insignia confronting a German dachshund. The breed’s stocky build, determined expression, and reputation for tenacity made it a natural symbol of Marine identity.
In 1921, Brigadier General Smedley D. Butler purchased a pedigree English Bulldog named King Bulwark as the official mascot of Marine Barracks Quantico. The dog was renamed Jiggs and enlisted in 1922, receiving a service record and the rank of sergeant major. Since then, successive bulldogs have represented the Corps.
The modern mascot line is known as Chesty, named for Lieutenant General Lewis “Chesty” Puller. These dogs participate in ceremonies, public events, and recruiting activities. The mascot is a symbolic representative, not a military working dog; its ceremonial rank and uniform are part of Marine Corps tradition.
