Which breed is often called the 'gentle giant' due to its size and temperament?

The story behind the answer

The Great Dane is often called the “gentle giant” because of its enormous size and generally calm, affectionate temperament.

Despite its name, the breed developed in Germany, where large mastiff-type dogs were refined for hunting wild boar and guarding estates. Its German name, Deutsche Dogge, means “German mastiff.” Great Danes are among the tallest dog breeds: breed standards call for males to stand at least 30 inches at the shoulder and females at least 28 inches.

Their impressive height can make them look intimidating, but well-socialized Great Danes are typically friendly, devoted, and patient family companions. They are not the same breed as the Mastiff, Newfoundland, or Saint Bernard, although all four are large dogs. The nickname describes a common breed reputation, not a guarantee that every individual dog will have the same personality.

Their size also brings practical concerns, including a need for space and a comparatively short lifespan. Great Danes are also associated with conditions such as bloat and dilated cardiomyopathy.
