Which breed is known for its 'tuxedo' coat pattern?

The story behind the answer

The Boston Terrier is the breed known for its distinctive “tuxedo” coat pattern.

The classic Boston Terrier coat combines white markings with black, brindle, or seal colouring. Typical white areas include the muzzle band, facial blaze, chest, collar, and parts of the legs, creating the impression of a dog wearing formal evening clothes. Seal coats can look black but show a reddish cast in bright light.

This polished appearance helped give the breed its nickname, “The American Gentleman.” The Boston Terrier originated in the United States from bull-and-terrier-type dogs, with an early foundation dog named Hooper’s Judge often identified as central to the breed’s development. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1893.

The tuxedo pattern is not the same as a completely black-and-white colour label: the arrangement of white markings is part of the breed’s characteristic look. Boston Terriers are also compact, short-tailed, smooth-coated dogs with large round eyes and upright ears. Massachusetts designated the Boston Terrier its official state dog in 1979.
