Which breed is known for its spectacles-like markings and was a symbol of Dutch patriotism?

The story behind the answer

The breed known for spectacles-like facial markings and its role as a symbol of Dutch patriotism is the Keeshond. Its “spectacles” are dark lines running from the outer corners of the eyes toward the lower corners of the ears, often joined by short eyebrow markings.

The breed became associated with the Dutch Patriot faction during political unrest in the late 18th century, shortly before the French Revolution. It was named after Cornelis de Gyselaer, a Patriot leader whose nickname was Kees; “hond” is Dutch for dog. When the House of Orange returned to power, the politically identified breed nearly disappeared.

Keeshonden were also known as Dutch Barge Dogs because they were commonly seen on barges traveling the Netherlands’ canals and rivers. Their thick double coat, curled tail, and silver-and-black coloring made them distinctive working companions as well as symbols.

The breed’s ancestry is sometimes debated. English-language traditions emphasize its Dutch development, while the Fédération Cynologique Internationale places it within the German Spitz family. That historical debate does not change the breed’s unmistakable spectacles or patriotic association.
