Which breed is famous for its black or liver spots on a white coat?
Answer
Dalmatian
Answer
Dalmatian
The Dalmatian is famous for its black or liver-colored spots on a white coat.
Dalmatians are muscular, athletic dogs known for endurance and stamina. Their distinctive markings are not fully visible at birth: puppies are generally born with plain white coats, and the spots usually begin appearing within about 10 days. The pattern continues developing until the dog is around 18 months old. Spots are commonly black or liver, meaning brown, and they are usually round and clearly defined.
Liver spotting is recessive, so both parents must carry the relevant gene for liver-spotted puppies to be produced. Black-spotted Dalmatians generally have black noses, while liver-spotted dogs have brown noses. These details help distinguish the two classic color varieties.
The Dalmatian can be confused with an English Setter or Pointer because those breeds may also have spotted coats. A Harlequin Great Dane has a black-and-white patch pattern, however, rather than the Dalmatian’s characteristic round spots. Dalmatians also became strongly associated with carriage dogs, firehouses, and later popular culture, but their defining visual feature remains the spotted coat.
